I was unable to attend the parade on Saturday but I did get to the festival on Sunday. I spent a couple of hours helping out Equality Virginia and then wandered around taking photos.

I was amazed at the number of people that said they no longer lived in Virginia. I’m not shocked. Some members of the Virginia legislature seem intent on making Virginia an unwelcome place. I can’t really fault anyone who decides to leave but I’m not ready to walk away from the place that I’ve lived the last thirteen years. Not everyone in Virginia is a hate-monger and I stil hold out hope that decency will win the day.

I ended up helping two organizations at the Celebrate Fairfax Festival. On Friday, I was working for Fairfax ARES and on Saturday, Equality Fairfax.

I wish I had known that they were going to show fireworks because I would have brought a tripod along but I was not prepared and so have no fireworks photos to show. Next year I’ll know better.

Though hot, the thunderstorms passed us by and it was not a bad couple of days to spend outside.

In the years I’ve lived in northern Virginia, I had never attended Viva Vienna. Until last year, I’d never even heard of it. But, I guess if you stick around long enough, you can’t help learning about new things.

My motivation for attending this time was that I signed up to work the Equality Fairfax booth for a couple of hours and so I figured that I would grab the camera and head out a couple of hours early to see the fair and take some phtoos.  I didn’t take too many photos, but I did get a few.

Equality Fairfax held a meeting at the Annndale Campus of the Northern Virginia Community College to go over the results of the 2005 Virginia General Assembly. The results were mixed: one positive bill was passed, several anti-equality bills were killed or watered-down and the anti-marriage amendment passed its first step.Around a dozen legislators showed up to speak ranging from those who have long helld pro-equality positions to those who voted for the health-insurance bill yet also voted for the amendment. I hope that by next year some of those who voted for discriminatin and hatred will have seen the error of their positions. Rather than present the results of the session here, you can read the results on the Equality Virginia website.

Delegate Mitchell Van Yahres has introduced HB1633 which would repeal HB751, the so-called Marriage Affirmation Act.

I support this Mr Van Yahres and his attempt to undo the damage done by the Virginia Legislature last year. I urge everyone to write their delegates (you can find out who that is at the Virginia General Assembly website.

I wrote the following letter to my delegate (Plum):

Mr. Plum,

I urge you to support HB1633 which would abolish the Marriage Affirmation Act. The so-called Marriage Affirmation Act serves only to make gay and lesbian Virginians into second class citizens by making it legal, actually mandatory, to discriminate against us.

I know you did not support HB751 last year and thank you for that and I hope that you will vote to undo the damage that HB751 did.

Regards,
Linda Thomas
