According to (a now stale link on) CNN, many Americans are upset over a letter campaign originating from the UK that targets voters in swing states. The letter campaign is pro-Kerry and anti-Bush.

The outrage seems to be on the order of those [expletive deleted] Brits should stay out of our politics. Think about it, though. What happens here in our country has profound implications for the rest of the world. Why shouldn’t they try to influence us in our decision-making process. Just because they don’t get a vote? That doesn’t seem like a reason not to care.

I think I’d take the same stance even if the letters were pro-Bush. I wouldn’t be happy about it, but then it’s hard to be happy when perfectly good humans make extraordinarily stupid decisions.

To make matters worse, the Fox network expressed outrage at the letter-writing campaign. This from a network that needs to look up what the actual definition of the word “journalism” actually means.

Keep those letters coming! Just because you aren’t an American doesn’t mean that actions in America don’t affect you. Just ask the civilians in Iraq that are dying every day.

In the New York Times, Bush defended the war on Iraq despite having misled the country on his reasons for going to war

No weapons or means to produce them have been found yet Bush still insists that Iraq was a real threat. His statement about Iraq sponsoring  terrorism is, to my knowledge, still without any supporting evidence. Indeed, terrorism seems to be a worse threat today than it was before we went to Iraq.

Don’t get me wrong, Saddam Hussein wasn’t a nice man but he appeared to be a contained threat. Instead we have traded a contained and easily identifiable threat for chaos and disorder.

How is this an improvement?

George Bush’s Iraq War was a mistake and it will be a mistake that we and our children pay for for a long, long time. Think about that when going to the polls next month.

Louisiana Amendment Not Legal

According to CNN, the recently passed ammendment banning same-sex marriages was overturned. Sadly, it was overturned because of a technicality: in Lousiana, constitutional ammendments are restricted to one issue and this one had two: banning gay marriage and also banning civil unions.

It will be appealed, of course, but at least one state’s attempt to discriminate against it’s citizens has been blocked.

The House voted today on the proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. As expected it failed. The sad part is that it still had a majority though not the 2/3 majority needed.

Somehow the arguments against same-sex marriage just don’t make any sense.

Take, for example, Marilin Musgrave, a republican from Colorado who denounced activist judges that impose their will against the will of the people. Isn’t it the job of a judge to act according to our laws and constitution even when that acts against a popular viewpoint? If it weren’t for these “activist” judges, would blacks have no legal recourse against segregation? Would mixed-race marriages still be illegal? The “activist” judges argument is just noise for complaining about a judge that makes a decision that she doesn’t like.

How does any same-sex marriage hurt or diminish any heterosexual marriage? It doesn’t. Instead it strengthens family by protecting children and gives couples a way to formally tie their lives together.

Congress should be voting on an amendment to allow same-sex marriages. That would be the right and proper thing to do.
