You may have heard about the shooting at a Knoxville church yesterday. If you haven't, read the article in the link. It gives a good summary. It's bad enough that innocent people were targeted for this man to attempt police assisted suicide. What's worse is that this is an extreme example of misplaced anger.
Adkisson attacked those people because the church was, in his mind, too liberal. He was out of work. His food stamps were about to run out. He probably had years of anger that finally burst out.
The sad irony is that if it weren't for people he'd describe as liberal, he'd never have received those food stamps. If it hadn't been for people he'd call conservative, he wouldn't have been getting cut off. Yet, in his mind the liberals were bad and the conservatives were good.
This is just one of the countless cases of people acting against their own self interest in the whole liberal vs. conservative ideology battle. While it is an extreme case, it's the same pattern. What will it take for people to realize the social safety net the conservative movement tries so hard to dismantle is intended for them?
