Romney (and McCain also though that isn't mentioned in the article) thinks the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy shouldn't be changed. He thinks that making major changes during a conflict is a bad idea. So he thinks that getting rid of qualified men and women who have specialized skills and are hard to replace is a good idea. Unfortunately, I think the author is giving far too much credence to Bush's "compassionate conservatism" claim. The veto has already been threatened and it seems Bush has lately begun to enjoy wielding his veto pen.
